I created this BLOG in hopes that my journey with my mother and her Alzheimer’s can help others. I list my daily posts below. I wanted to explain a little about my mother Alzheimer’s. She has helped me all my life with my journey of cerebral palsy. My website that talks about my cerebral palsy and my climbing adventures is at www.timsashwood.com if you want to check it out. She is 90 years old and has had Alzheimer’s for at least 15 years now. I first noticed her memory problems back in the fall of 1997. She was able to keep driving and handling her check book until the winter of 2003/2004. She could still go on 2 mile hikes with me into 2005 and ½ mile walks thru 2008, now she mostly can only walk a few yards before her hip starts to hurt her. I moved back into her home in 2005 to help her stay in her house although I have kept my own place thru March 2011. One of the things I feel that has helped her go 15 years and still going is I’ve had people (mostly me) around her quit a bit. This helped her stay engaged with people. In 2003 she averaged people with her @90hrs/wk out of 168 hrs in a week, in 2004/2005/2006 @110hrs/wk, 2007 @125hrs/wk, 2008 @135hrs/wk. Then starting in January 2009 she has had someone with her 24/7. I started using care givers in 2005 to help and to give mom other women to talk to and get use to. Right now she can still dress and undress herself but is starting to struggle with it and needs to be told what to do most of the time. In December 2009 she started to refuse to wash herself now one of the care givers I use sponge bathes her 3 times a week. Right now mentally she is like a 3 or 4 year old girl with just a few seconds of memory. She has started to get confused with the getting undressed and dressed part but can still do it herself. She has also sometimes thought the person she sees in the bathroom mirror is someone else this started in 2010. I started using a diaper pad on mom’s bed in July 2011. In the fall of 2011 we increased the dosage on mom’s Galantamine. In March of 2012 I stopped giving her the supplements it has started to get harder to get her to take the pills. So I started just giving her a one a day vitamin instead. Then in May 2012 we have started to crush mom’s pills and put them in applesauce about 3 or 4 days a week. She loves applesauce. She can still walk on her own with no help. Here is a list of the drugs she takes for her Alzheimer’s.

December 2013
It was a good month overall I was extended again at work until the end of January and it was the month we celebrate the birth of our savior Jesus.  I had dropped in November 2 24/7 people down to just one 24/7 person. This seems to work out better as well as saving money.  I still have 2 people here during the day when I’m at work and for the graveyard shift so I can sleep but still have 2 people to turn and change mom.  Andrea was able one day to get mom standing on her own just holding onto Andrea for balance.  She stood right up from the wheelchair and if the lift wasn’t right behind Andrea mom may even had taken a step or two.  This was pretty exciting and we have tried a few times since but no more luck yet but I do believe she will walk again.  Other than not walking mom once again has bounced back at least to where she was before Labor Day.  Mom remains in good spirits most of the time.  She is easy to get laughing and likes to give kisses.  I’m not happy mom has had to deal with Alzheimer’s but I am honored to have walked by her side through it all even the hard times from the past.  She has proven to be a fighter bouncing back from near death several times over the years.  One thing that is new over the past 2 months or so mom sometimes goes longer time without bowel movements over 16 hours but then has a bowel movement every couple of hours. She needs to be changed every couple of hours so we go through about 12 to 14 diapers a day even the few days she goes 16 hours without bowel movements.  When mom is having problems with bowel movements we give her more fruit and that seems to work. The number of diapers started increasing like this n October.  Mom normally drinks between 50 and 60 ounces of fluid a day and around 1200 to 1400 calories a day.   Mom this month has been eating most of her meals in the wheelchair and at the dining room table. She eats on average 80 percent of her meals with no one feeding her.  We did talk to my brothers Larry and Paul and Paul’s wife Kay around Xmas on SKYPE.  We did bring in the New Year together it was just me and mom up at midnight.

Monday October 21st thru Saturday November 30th 2013
It has been awhile since I’ve updated the blog.  I just don’t spend as much time at my PC.  Some of the things new with me I was extended at Work until the end of year at least and still go to church every Sunday.  I will just condense the weeks since my last entry to pretty much the highlights with mom.  I have now one person here 24/7 to help with mom plus my normal women that have been with me for years.  I did have 2 24/7 people here for a while but decided to drop down to just one and have someone come in for the graveyard shift so I can sleep before going into work.  We have now changed doctors to one that comes out to the house. The doctor wrote an order for Medicare to give us a wheelchair and we use it daily.  Mom is still bed ridden and the PT and OT have stopped coming out.  Mom has bounced back some though.  Since we got the wheelchair we feed mom when she is in the chair we either use the hospital table or mostly put her at the dining room table to eat.  Mom has also gone back to feeding herself most of the time or at least 60 percent of the time so that is an improvement.  Mom remains in a great playful spirit most of the time.  So even though she is not walking yet at least she seems to have bounced back to herself before the hospital visit on Labor Day at least in a lot of ways.  We also have mom now back to drinking 50 to 60 ounces and eating between 1000 to 1500 calories each day.  All it took was god’s help and lots of tender loving care.  Now for me one of the tougher things is now with the 24 hour girls and graveyard shift girls and my normal girls I now have about 8 women to keep happy and at peace.  Also almost all the people in my group at work are women. How did the men of yesteryear keep so many wives happy LOL.

Saturday October 19th and Sunday October 20th 2013
Mom was in the chair a couple times for about 2 hours each time.  I also had her sitting on the edge of the bed for about 45 minutes and almost got her standing on Saturday.  On Sunday afternoon after I got back from church I had mom sitting on the side of the bed for 70 minutes.  Both days I played with her and moved her legs and she even kicked her legs on her own.  This time I did get mom up standing by giving her a hug and helping her stand up.  She was holding onto me but was standing mostly on her own without me holding her up.  She was up for only a few seconds but was up.  This time I was doing it without a big production and trying to make her do it.  Mom also had over 1000 calories and 50 ounces of fluid both days.

Sunday October 13th thru Friday October 18th 2013
Mom had the PT and OT out both Monday and Wednesday this week.  She still needs a lot of help standing up it is a long process.  Mom sits up fine on the edge of the bed.  Also mom wasn’t feeling real well on Monday morning.  Mom is still eating around 1,000 calories or more per day and drinking over 40 ounces of fluid.  Mom is mostly pleasant and cheerful.  We have mom sitting in the chair a couple of times or more each day for about 2 hours each day.

Tuesday October 8th thru Saturday October 12th 2013
It’s been busy the past week well every week in busy.  Some of the highlights Wednesday I was here when the PT and OT were here.  Mom didn’t really walk but did stand up 5 times the last 2 the PT and OT were holding her up mostly.  She then sat on the edge of the bed for a few minutes.  We get her in the chair at least twice a day and today she sat on the edge of the bed holding herself up for almost an hour with me sitting in front of her talking to her.  She is eating about 1000 calories a day and at least 30+ ounces of fluid the last 2 days has been over 40 or 50.  She is more talkative and alert during the day and sometimes midevening if she napped some. I’m still working and was extended earlier this month until the end of month and it may go longer.  She still seems to be getting stronger overall and spoiled with 2 of us around her all day.

Monday October 7th 2013
The PT and OT came this morning at 9am and had mom taking a few steps with help from them holding her up.  They plan on coming back out on Wednesday at 9am and I’m thinking of going into work late that day to see if I can help get mom to walk more myself and to see for myself where she stands so to speak.  The nurse also came out and checked moms INR it was 2.6.

Thursday October 3rd thru Sunday October 6th 2013
We continue to put mom in the chair for a few hours each day.  We mostly feed her when she is in the chair.  Mom will have a busy day Monday with the nurse, doctor, PT and OT all coming.  The doctor is just a checkup, the nurse to check moms INR count.  The PT and OT will she if they can’t get mom up for a longer amount of time.  So it looks like mom will have a busy day on Monday.

Wednesday October 2nd 2013
Mom again today had both the PT and OT out.  They got mom up on her feet 3 times but today they were supporting her more.  Mom then sat up on the edge of the bed for more than 15 minutes.  Mom then took a short nap and was up sitting in her chair when I got home at 5pm and was very alert for her at least.  She had just finished dinner.  We put her back in bed around 6pm and she went to sleep.  It was kinda neat she was sleeping with a smile on her face.  The PT and OT plan on coming back on Monday.

Tuesday October 1st 2013
Mom had the speech therapist over around noon to check with thicker fluid to help mom swallow which she said mom was doing a good job of and unless we need her back out this was her last visit.  Mom slept a lot over the evening.

Monday September 30th 2013
Mom had the PT and OT over this morning and they did get mom up on her feet standing mostly holding her own weight up herself.  She was up for only a few seconds but today she did stand a little longer and did take a step so some improvement.  The speech therapist also stopped by this morning to check on how mom is swallowing to make sure it is not going down the wrong tube.  The nurse also stopped by around noontime to check moms INR and it was 3.1.  Mom is still eating around 1000 calories but today we mostly feed her.  For a while this evening she was sound asleep.

Friday September 27th thru Sunday September 29th
Mom still has good and so so days.  We put her in the chair for a few hours each day and normally feed her when she sits in the chair.  Mom will feed herself if left alone for awhile at least then we finish feeding her.  She is still eating around 1000 calories a day and trying to keep her drinking fluid.  On Friday and Saturday nights it’s just the one caregiver and I to change and clean mom as well as moving her every 2 hours.  This is to try and save mom and me some money.

Thursday September 26th 2013
The PT came out today and between the PT and caregivers they got mom up on her feet for a few seconds then mom sat up by herself on the side of the bed for 15 minutes.  They had her in the chair for a few hours as well.  Mom is being changed about every 2 hours and rolled every 2 hours when she is in the bed.  So mom is getting a feel stronger a little each week but it will take time.  I enjoyed hanging out with mom tonight she is getting spoiled with all the attention she gets but then she is worth it.

Wednesday September 25th 2013
The OT had mom sitting on the edge of the bed today and mom was sitting up for about 30 minutes without help.  She then napped some after the OT was done. We are also having mom sit in the chair for about 2 hour intervals using the lift to get her in the chair.  Mom seems to be getting stronger with times of weakness but overall getting stronger.  It will be awhile for her to get back to walking but she will get there I’m speaking that into her future.

Saturday September 21st thru Tuesday September 24th 2013
On Saturday I had the foot doctor come to the house and trim moms toe nails.  Mom is getting stronger overall still weak but then remember she has been bed ridden since Labor Day weekend so it will take awhile even a couple of months or more to get back but I’m determined to give her that chance.  Mom was feeling weaker on Monday after being up a lot over the weekend but was feeling better today.  Mom is getting a lot of one on one care by people who care about her and that will help get her back if anything will.  I have experience myself of how you will push if you have loving around you when you feel weak or when you are a child which is where mom is mentally.

Friday September 20th 2013
Mom was awake most of the day today and evening being rather chatty.  The nurse stopped by today and the PT moms INR count was down so we readjusted the amount some to try and get it back up.  The PT had mom sitting on the edge of the bed on her own but mom did not have the strength yet to stand.  When they put weight on her legs they got very wobble.  Mom did sit in the chair for a couple of hours.

Thursday September 19th 2013
Mom continued to do better today sitting herself up and talking clearer still getting better and closer to herself before the hospitals hopefully walking some at least in a week or 2.

Wednesday September 18th 2013
We brought mom home today she was home around 4pm.  She was very perky and talkative with the girls and even aware enough to tell them she pupped so they changed mom.  This was the most aware mom has been since before the first time to the hospital.  Mom was even helping to sit herself up in bed by pulling on the hand railings.  Mom even took the dish of food out of the caregivers hand and feed herself for a while.  We sat mom in the chair for dinner using the lift.  Mom ate real food all day today and last night before that she was on a fluid diet mostly.  After dinner mom slept some during the evening.

Tuesday September 17th 2013
Went in again shortly after lunch to moms hospital room.  They are hoping to be able to let her go home tomorrow afternoon.  I spent most of the day with mom she again today was alert for her and awake most of the time I was there.

Sunday and Monday September 15th and 16th 2013
I took mom to the ER and Christian NE Sunday at midnight moms stomach was swallowing up too much but after several tests and cat scan they found nothing so I took mom back home then at 8am mom started throwing up and had a small fever so I took her this time to Mercy Hospital and they ended up emitting her so my and moms Sunday was spent in the ER and Hospitals.  Then I went to work Monday in the morning before heading out to the hospital around lunch time.  They found moms blood count was down to 1.5 instead of 2.0 on her blood clots so the amount the hospital last Monday said to take was wrong.  So they need to get that count up to 2.0 first.  I spent the afternoon Monday and evening at the hospital with mom she was alert and even moving her legs around on the bed.  I should say she was alert of the things around her and even a bit playful.

Saturday September 14th 2013
Mom was fairly talkative today and we feed her real food instead of baby food tonight for dinner and she liked it.  The girls got mom out of bed and put her in the chair using the lift.  I actually slept in some today first time in a long time.  I spent a lot of time with mom as well as the girls mom is getting all kinds of attention.  I did leave some today to get groceries and another trash can we do use a lot of depends because we do not let mom sit in her waste.  I will get up earlier tomorrow to go to church.

Friday September 13th 2013
Mom sat in her chair for about 2 hours today when the PT was here.  They used the lift to raise her into the chair.  We been having problems with the bed yesterday and today they replaced it the electrical wasn’t working correctly.  They also finally brought over yesterday the crank to raise the bed up higher to make changing easier.  I have had 2 girls here 24/7 to help and it seems to be helping mom get better she is getting more attention.  I will get some more time to play with mom myself this weekend since I don’t have to go to work.  Mom is getting a little better each day.

Tuesday thru Thursday September 12th
I have had mom home now since Monday night.  We got a lift from medicare on Wednesday and the OT Wednesday and PT today both helped show how to use the lift and had mom in the chair about 1 or 2 hours each day.  Mom is improving since she has been out of the hospital and is more alert and playful.  Still a ways to go but it is nice to see she is improving more each day.  She is liking being back home I and the girls I have helping me are giving mom a lot of attention and loving.

Thursday thru Monday September 9th
Thursday night I went over to the hospital to visit mom after work for a few hours the same on Friday before coming home and eating dinner.  Then on Saturday I spent most of the day visiting mom in the hospital until 7pm the same with Sunday.  Then on Monday we finally got to bring mom home getting home around 5:30pm.  I had Ashley start tonight at 5pm she will be working the evening and graveyard shifts.  For the short term at least I’m have 2 people helping mom 24 hours a day.  Then we will see were it goes from there and how mom does.

Wednesday September 4th 2013
Mom is still in the hospital but looked better when I saw her around dinner time after work.  Larry also spent some time over there today as well. They said hopefully mom can come home in a couple of days.  Larry and I then ate dinner when I got home.  We watched TV and talked until I went to bed.

Tuesday September 3rd 2013
Mom is still in the hospital and will be for a few days.  They found blood clots today in both of her legs.  I spent most of the day sitting with mom the morning she was being tested for different things then had lunch while I was there.  Today she spent most of the day sleeping.  My brother Larry flew in for a few days so I could go back to work.

Monday September 2nd 2013
I spent most of the day at the hospital with mom.  She was starting to get better after they started the antibiotics.  This afternoon she was starting to get back to her normal awareness but not there yet.  She still couldn’t walk though.  I just spent the evening relaxing and watching TV when I got back home.

Sunday September 1st 2013
Again I spent the day at the hospital.  It was a good thing we didn’t bring mom home yesterday.  This afternoon mom got a fever so they took another urine test this time it did show the infection that was there before which is what I thought the problem was on Friday.  So I felt better they finally found the problem.  I got home about 7:30pm ate then did some grocery shopping.

Saturday August 31st 2013
I spent the day and early evening with mom at the hospital.  She spent most of the day sleeping.  I was happy to see that mom’s muscle spasms had stopped when I got to her room.  When they tried to get mom to walk at all they had to help and took 2 of them to get mom from the bed to the sink in the room about 3 feet.  Mom was very weak but they kept saying the test results did not show anything.  If I wasn’t there when the doctor finally stop by he would have released her.  I had to push the issue she had something wrong that they were missing.  So he said they would keep her one more day.  I got home around 8pm and was in bed by 10pm to try and get some sleep.

Friday August 30th 2013
Took mom in to the ER for tests and they kept her overnight.  Spent most of the day in the ER then came home and went to bed early.

Thursday August 29th 2013
Mom did not have any bladder or bowel accidents today or overnight.  Both Adrienne and Andrea were here when I left for work to celebrate my birthday.  One of the people in my office bought my lunch and I was so busy the day went by fast.  When I got home I found out that mom wasn’t drinking or eating much all day.  I gave her drinks a little bit at a time and did get some down her.  Mom also started with some muscles and whole body jerking around some.  We watched TV but mom was napping a lot.  Mom was also started moving really slow.  Adrienne did not show up so it was just mom and I all night.

Wednesday August 28th 2013
Mom did have a bladder accident this morning around 5am as she was on her way to the bathroom.  Jaki did a pretty good job her first night and time with mom.  I was able to get some sleep last night.  Andrea was hear and Jaki was leaving when I left.  Andrea left note that her word of the day for mom was child like.  I ran into a very heavy traffic night on my way home some water main broke and they had the 3 lanes on I-70 going down to 1 lane so I had about 1 ½ hour commute so I had Patti start feeding mom dinner.  I then ate when I got home as mom was finishing her drink.  We then watched NBC show “Americas Got Talent” with mom napping some.

Tuesday August 27th 2013
Mom did not have any bladder or bowel accidents today or overnight.  Mom was sleeping when I left for work and Adrienne was still here.  Andrea left note that her word of the day for mom was chipper.  Patti said mom was good.  Patti was taking mom to the dining room when I got home at 5:30pm so we ate dinner right away and the last time mom ate anything was 6:30pm.  We spent the evening watching shows “So you think you can dance” and “Americas Got Talent”.  Adrienne called in and couldn’t make it so I called the new girl Jaki and she will start tonight.  So I’m glad Adrienne mentioned Jaki. Mom did not have any bladder or bowel accidents today or overnight.  Mom was sleeping when I left for work and Adrienne was still here.  Andrea left note that her word of the day for mom was charming.  I hired another women today to help with mom. She has about 10 years of experience and is a friend of Adrienne.  Mom was sitting at the dining table when I got home so we ate dinner and the last time mom ate was 6:30pm.  We spent the evening watching NBC shows “America Ninja Warrior”  and “Get Out Alive”.  Mom was awake most of the evening enjoying herself.

Sunday August 25th 2013
Mom did have a bowel accident around noontime while sitting at the dining table.  She was doing a lot of bowel movements also once I got her in the bathroom.  I kept going into the bathroom every few minutes and mom kept cutting farts so I figured she wasn’t done yet.  We took a drive after she was done.  It was a sunny day with temps in the 90’s.  We drove along the river road to Grafton IL then past Sioux Passage Park on the way back.  We saw several boats more near Grafton even a few sailboats.  The sailboats bring back great memories.  Also several motorcycles and a few people on the hike/bike trail. Mom was fairly talkative and alert for her on the drive.  We had dinner after we got back and a bathroom break.  So the last time mom ate was 6pm and we spent the evening watching TV and laughing as well as us both napped some.
