Updated on May 11th 2012 my updates are in bold below
I created this BLOG in hopes that my journey with my mother and her Alzheimer’s can help others. I list my daily posts below. I wanted to explain a little about my mother Alzheimer’s. She has helped me all my life with my journey of cerebral palsy. My website that talks about my cerebral palsy and my climbing adventures is at www.timsashwood.com if you want to check it out. She is 90 years old and has had Alzheimer’s for at least 15 years now. I first noticed her memory problems back in the fall of 1997. She was able to keep driving and handling her check book until the winter of 2003/2004. She could still go on 2 mile hikes with me into 2005 and ½ mile walks thru 2008, now she mostly can only walk a few yards before her hip starts to hurt her. I moved back into her home in 2005 to help her stay in her house although I have kept my own place thru March 2011. One of the things I feel that has helped her go 15 years and still going is I’ve had people (mostly me) around her quit a bit. This helped her stay engaged with people. In 2003 she averaged people with her @90hrs/wk out of 168 hrs in a week, in 2004/2005/2006 @110hrs/wk, 2007 @125hrs/wk, 2008 @135hrs/wk. Then starting in January 2009 she has had someone with her 24/7. I started using care givers in 2005 to help and to give mom other women to talk to and get use to. Right now she can still dress and undress herself but is starting to struggle with it and needs to be told what to do most of the time. In December 2009 she started to refuse to wash herself now one of the care givers I use sponge bathes her 3 times a week. Right now mentally she is like a 3 or 4 year old girl with just a few seconds of memory. She has started to get confused with the getting undressed and dressed part but can still do it herself. She has also sometimes thought the person she sees in the bathroom mirror is someone else this started in 2010. I started using a diaper pad on mom’s bed in July 2011. In the fall of 2011 we increased the dosage on mom’s Galantamine. In March of 2012 I stopped giving her the supplements it has started to get harder to get her to take the pills. So I started just giving her a one a day vitamin instead. Then in May 2012 we have started to crush mom’s pills and put them in applesauce about 3 or 4 days a week. She loves applesauce. She can still walk on her own with no help. Here is a list of the drugs she takes for her Alzheimer’s.
•Razadyne started in 2000 then in 2011 changed to generic Galantamine
•Namenda started March 2005

Mom did not have any bladder or bowel accidents overnight or
today. Mom was up, dressed and feed
when I left. I ate my breakfast with mom
as she ate her lunch. I just had enough
time to do a little playing before getting back by 2:30pm. Andrea said her word of the day for mom was
kissy. Mom was in the bathroom when I
got home. It was a cloudy and snowy day
with a high temp of 33. Mom and I did
take a drive shortly after I got home.
We drove along the river road to Grafton IL then Sioux Passage Park on
the way back. Mom was quiet on the first
part of the drive but started talking and was more alert after we got to
Grafton and turned around. We mostly
talked about the river, houses on top of the cliffs and the number of cars in
the parking lots. We saw no boats on the
river and no one on the bike/hike trail it was just too cold for them. We ate dinner shortly after we got back so
the last time mom ate was 5:30pm. We
then spent the rest of the evening watching TV and laughing with mom not
napping tonight. Mom also did not wonder
around the house tonight. Mom went to
bed about 12:45am and needed help new normal amount of help changing.

on.

50’s. Andrea said her word of the day
for mom was mushy. Mom and I took a
drive shortly after I got back. We drove
along the river road to Grafton IL then to Sioux Passage Park on the way

along the river road. We did see some
people enjoying the warmer temps on the bike/hike trail. We talked a little less than our normal on
the drive, talking mostly about the houses on top of the cliffs. I fixed dinner when we got back so the last
time mom ate was at 5:15pm. We spent the

Monday January 7th 2013
Mom did not have any bladder or bowel accidents overnight or

talk to my brother Larry over SKYPE this evening. Mom went to bed at 1am and needed more

Sunday January 6th 2013
Mom did have a bowel accident about 1 hour before I got back
from church. I had my friend Patti over
this morning while I went to church. Mom
was sleeping when I left for church and was watching TV when I got back
home. I met up with some friends at
church then ate brunch with them like normal.
Patti was able to get mom to take her pills and feed mom breakfast like
normal. It was a sunny day with temps in
the low 30’s. We took a drive this
afternoon along the river road to Grafton IL.
Again today there were no boats or barges on the river and no
motorcycles on the river road. We did
see several people on the bike/hike trail.
We talked about our normal amount and mostly talked about the river and
houses on the top of the cliffs. Then
after a bathroom break we had dinner. So
the last time mom ate was at 5:30pm. We
spent the evening watching TV and laughing with mom napping some. Patti had put mom’s house coat on after the
bowel accident so I would not have to change her again and she could still go
for a drive. Since it was so cold I
warmed the car up before our drive so it was toasty when we got in the
car. Mom went to bed at 12:30am.
Saturday January 5th 2013
Mom did not have any bladder or bowel accidents overnight or
today. I had my friend Patti over this
morning and she got mom up feed, pills and dressed. I just ran some errands this morning before
getting back by noontime. Patti said her
word of the day for mom was very sweet. It
was a partly sunny day with temps in the 40’s.
Mom went into the bathroom after I got home so we didn’t go on our first
drive until 1:30pm. She was in there a
while which she normal is when she has a bowel movement. I forgot to mention yesterday that when I got
up mom was reading through one of Andrea’s books. That is the first time she did something like
that in a very longtime. Back to today
we drove along the river road to Grafton IL.
We no longer stop at the visitor center there we just turn around and
head back home. We did not see any boats
or barges on the river. We did see
several people parked alongside the road looking at the bald eagles. The bald eagles start arriving the end of
December and leave back north in March.
They like sitting up on the cliff tops and fish in the river. There were several people out on the
bike/hike trail as well today I think some were more interested in watching the
bald eagles. Mom talked a lot on the
drive pointing out houses on top of the cliffs.
I gave mom a banana and some drink when we got back home then she napped
a little. We took our second drive at
4pm to Sioux Passage and Sunset Parks. It
got dark before we got back so we saw a few Xmas lights but most are down by
now. We talked about our normal amount
on this drive. I fixed dinner when we
got back so the last time mom ate was 6pm.
We spent the evening watching TV and laughing with both of us napping
some. Mom went to bed at midnight and
needed her normal amount of instruction and help with changing.
Friday January 4th 2013
Mom did not have any bladder or bowel accidents overnight or
today. Mom was up, washed, dressed and feed
when I left. I met up with a friend for
lunch and we sat around and just talked for a while. I then ran some errands before getting home
by 5pm. Andrea said her word of the day
for mom was playful and Patti said her word was sweet. It was a partly sunny day with temps in the
40’s. Mom and I ate dinner when I got
home so the last time mom ate was at 5:30pm.
We spent the evening watching TV and laughing mom was playful for a
while. She did do her wondering around
the house some tonight. We both napped a
little as we watched TV. Mom went to bed
at 1am and needed more than her normal amount of instruction with changing.
Thursday January 3rd 2013
Mom did not have any bladder or bowel accidents overnight or
today. Mom was up, dressed and eating
breakfast when I left. I just ran some
errands today before getting back by 2:30pm.
Andrea said her word of the day for mom was friendly. Mom was sitting in the dining room drink some
soda when I got home. It was a partly
sunny day with temps in the 30’s. We
took a drive after I got home to Columbia Bottom Conservation Area talking
about the views mostly and talking our normal amount. Shortly after we got back the power went out
it sounded like a transformer blew up this was at 4:30pm. After getting mom to the bathroom and calling
the electric company I decided to take mom out to eat since I had no idea how
long the power would be out. We went
over to a restaurant called Simply Tie.
We both had the stir fried broccoli with chicken over rice it was good. Mom liked the diet soda there she drank 2
glasses normally she doesn’t finish one glass.
I got a call from the electric company saying the power was fixed while
we were eating, so thank god it wasn’t out to long and we could head back
home. We took a drive around looking at
the Xmas lights on our way back home.
There are a lot less lights tonight but mom did enjoy the ones that were
up. Mom was also pretty good at the
restaurant we sat by the window. We
spent the rest of the evening watching TV and laughing until mom went to bed at
2am. Mom did not wonder around the house
tonight but did nap a little. Mom needed
her normal amount of help with changing tonight.

Tuesday January 1st 2013 Happy New Year
everyone
Mom did not have any bowel or bladder accidents today. I got mom up a few times overnight but we
got up for the day around noontime. I
had mom go to the bathroom then we ate breakfast or I should say brunch and mom
took her pills. I then got her dressed
for the day. The snow is mostly off the
roads now so we will be taking a drive. Our
first drive of the New Year was to Illinois then over to Columbia Bottom
Conservation Area before heading home.
We started our drive around 3pm and got home at 5pm. It was a cloudy day with temps in the
30’s. I fixed dinner when we got home so
the last time mom ate anything was at 6pm.
We took our second drive at 7pm to look at the Xmas lights. There are less lights up now that it is past
2012. Mom talked less on both
drives. We spent the rest of the evening
watching TV and laughing. Mom went to
bed at 10:30pmand needed a little more help than her normal on changing.
